Last week, the UCI Baseball field formally known as Anteater Ballpark was renamed and dedicated to Chancellor Emeritus Ralph J. Cicerone, who is currently the president of the National Academy of Sciences.
I got there early in order to get down onto the field to get some photos of the dedication. The current Chancellor Michael Drake was there and pumped up to speak about our on-the-rise sports programs.

I honestly expected to be shooting a lot more baseball this year. Last year I was pretty much the only person at the newspaper who would shoot the games. This year I have been busier and the newer staff photographers have been more inclined to shoot sports.

The last time there was a baseball feature photo for The New University was um….never? The whole time I have been a photographer with The New University there has never been a feature photo of a baseball player. From what I’ve experienced, the UCI baseball team is an exclusive club, and it is hard to get access.
The sports editor Umar texted me and told me that he wanted to do a feature photo with four of the baseball pitchers. It was going to be a star wars jedi themed shoot. It was all planned out. Light sabers and cloaks.

We got off to a slow start on the championship game day. After checking out of the hotel around 12:30pm, we got lunch and then headed over to the media room. We were the first ones there and later that night, the last ones there as well.

After UCI beat Ohio State in the semi-finals, we had a day off. Besides a press conference in the morning, we had the whole day free to go explore and see what Provo had to offer. After eating a late lunch we stopped by the Provo Visitors Center across the street from our hotel. That’s where we came across a place called “Jump On It”.

The second day in Provo was fully packed with full access to the team including private practices, strategy meetings, team lunch, locker room, training room and more. After talking with the UCI Athletics media reps, they hooked us up big time with all-access to the team.

I drove up to Provo, UT with the Sports Editor and Associate Sports Editor, Umar Hussain and Mark Ratto. We left Irvine at 6:30am on Wednesday morning and got to Provo at around 4:30pm…or was it 5:30pm. The one-hour time difference was one thing that we could never seem to get right.

Last Thursday was the MPSF Semifinals for Mens Volleyball. The No.1 ranked team UCI was playing No.5 USC. I really wanted to get a direct overhead shot of one of the UCI players serving. I had gone up in the catwalks prior to the start of the game to check out locations I could shoot from and found that none of the walkways were directly over the back line. I knew that I wasn’t allowed to shoot from up there too, but I didn’t know exactly where to set up the camera as a remote. About five minutes before the first game started I went back up and chose my position that I would be shooting from for the first game. Below, UCI’s sophomore outside hitter Jordan DuFault spikes the ball as three USC opponents attempt a block.

A couple weeks ago I went up to Mammoth with the UCI Snowboard team to shoot their last slope-style competition of the year. It was supposed to be a full weekend trip but turned into sleepless 24 hour adventure. Actually, I slept a lot in the car, so it was actually more sleepless for the two guys I rode up with, Daniel and Justin.
