change of plans…change of rules

Long Story short, I went to set up a backboard remote at a Men’s Basketball game, had everything setup perfectly, was forced to take it down an hour before the game, set up a overhead remote, got some shots, left a little disappointed. I guess backboard remotes are no longer allowed at our arena….

With the assistance of Ian, Panda, and Lee, I was able to get everything set up quick and easy.

working with womens basketball

Nikon D3, 300mm, 2500iso, f/2.8, 1/500, manual

A UCI fan jumps and screams in the stands in order to distract the other team from missing a free throw.

I am currently working for the UCI Women’s Basketball team doing filming. Since I am at every game I also have a lot of photos. I still have a lot to practice and go into every game trying to learn how to shoot it better. Here are some shots from two games in the past week.

UCI Mens Volleyball is back!

Nikon D3, 300mm, 320iso, f/8, 1/250, manual

UCI Mens Volleyball is finally back in season. Last year I found the spots where I like to shoot and where I knew I would always be able to get some solid images. I started off this year shooting from the same spot, although I would like to branch out and try to find some new angles for upcoming games throughout the season.

back to shooting Volleyball from up top & reflections on the floor

Nikon D3, 300mm, 320iso, f/7.1, 1/250, manual

I finally got to use my strobes for the last Women’s home game of the season. It was in the Bren Events Center at UCI which also has higher locations to shoot from. One thing that I noticed from shooting up there were the reflections on the floor. From the angle that I was shooting at I could see the reflection of the fans in the stands right behind the court.

Shocktoberfest 2009

I’m always looking forward to shooting Shocktoberfest at UCI. This year the concert featured Cold Flamez, Shwayze, and Gym Class Heros. Personally I though it was better than last year.

Check out the slide show below…

No.1 team crushed in the semi’s, i get caught…Utah here we come

Last Thursday was the MPSF Semifinals for Mens Volleyball. The No.1 ranked team UCI was playing No.5 USC. I really wanted to get a direct overhead shot of one of the UCI players serving. I had gone up in the catwalks prior to the start of the game to check out locations I could shoot from and found that none of the walkways were directly over the back line. I knew that I wasn’t allowed to shoot from up there too, but I didn’t know exactly where to set up the camera as a remote. About five minutes before the first game started I went back up and chose my position that I would be shooting from for the first game. Below, UCI’s sophomore outside hitter Jordan DuFault spikes the ball as three USC opponents attempt a block.

dwight howard inspired concept, empty arena & lots of equipment

Last tuesday I got a text message from the Umar the sports editor, “Can u meet me tomorrow at 3 at the bren? For carson clark feature photo?”. I was hoping he would call or text. On Monday I saw the sheet of paper with the page requests that the section editors fill out. Under the Sports section I saw “volleyball feature”, which usually meant there was going to be a feature story with a photo.

a helping hand and a behind-the-scenes perspective

My friend and fellow New University staff photographer, Brandon Wong, helped me out on a shoot I did for the newspaper the other day. He helped me set up and also managed to run around and get a ton of great shots.
