change of plans…change of rules

Long Story short, I went to set up a backboard remote at a Men’s Basketball game, had everything setup perfectly, was forced to take it down an hour before the game, set up a overhead remote, got some shots, left a little disappointed. I guess backboard remotes are no longer allowed at our arena….

With the assistance of Ian, Panda, and Lee, I was able to get everything set up quick and easy.

lugging lights all over campus…last minute rugby portrait

I was asked to take a photo of the UCI Men’s Rugby team’s new coach who also happens to be a professor at UCI. About 30 minutes before the shoot I loaded up my car with a ProPhoto 2400 kit and all my other equipment, with the help of my friend and fellow photographer Melissa Lee.

I was told to go to one of the social ecology buildings on campus where the coaches office is. It turned out that there was a nice plaza at the base of the building where I would have a lot of room to shoot. It was about 1:35pm so classes were in session, so the plaza was mine for about the next 30 min.

working with womens basketball

Nikon D3, 300mm, 2500iso, f/2.8, 1/500, manual

A UCI fan jumps and screams in the stands in order to distract the other team from missing a free throw.

I am currently working for the UCI Women’s Basketball team doing filming. Since I am at every game I also have a lot of photos. I still have a lot to practice and go into every game trying to learn how to shoot it better. Here are some shots from two games in the past week.

UCI Mens Volleyball is back!

Nikon D3, 300mm, 320iso, f/8, 1/250, manual

UCI Mens Volleyball is finally back in season. Last year I found the spots where I like to shoot and where I knew I would always be able to get some solid images. I started off this year shooting from the same spot, although I would like to branch out and try to find some new angles for upcoming games throughout the season.

shooting spot news & still trying to challenge myself

Nikon D3, 14-24mm @ 14mm, 200iso, f/2.8, 1/4000, manual

First week back at school and there are already protest happening on campus. The photo editor usually sends out a mass text to several photographers when there is some type of spot news occurrence happening on campus. Since I had some free time, I headed back to my dorm and picked up my camera to shoot the protest against the tuition increases that was happening near the flag poles on campus. I grabbed my 14-24mm and my 50mm. I tried to work a few different angles and get a good variety to send into the paper.

back to the baseline, back to basics

Nikon D3, 50mm, 2000iso, f/2.0, 1/800, manual

Although basketball is one of my favorite sports to shoot, I feel like it is one of the sports that I need to work on shooting the most. I also feel like shooting with my strobes has limited the ways that I see when I shoot basketball. I am trying to go back to shooting without strobes and to focus more on action, composition, and different angles. I shot a UCI Womens Basketball game almost entirely with a 50mm, trying to see all the different shots i could get from the baseline. I hope get back to the basics and really develop a strong basketball background.

UCI comes close, but fails to advance in the NCAA tournament

Nikon D3, 300mm, 3200iso, f/2.8, 1/800, manual

The UCI Mens Soccer team won the Big West Championship for the second year in a row and earned a first round bye in the NCAA tournament. They also earned the 16th seed in the tournament and got to host Stanford in the second round. I was excited to shoot such a big game, especially after not being able to shoot the second round last year due to the game being on the east coast. As a fan it was a disappointing game, although as a photographer it was interesting and action packed. I tried to get some emotion from our team after the game but there really wasn’t much. There were handshakes, a few hugs, and then a huddle. Nothing too special to end the night.
