My friend and fellow photographer Lee got us passes through the Big West to shoot the match. This was UCI’s best season start, ranked 11th in the country and undefeated up until this game when they lost 2-0 to undefeated 2nd nationally ranked team, Stanford. It felt good to be shooting sports again, and with long glass thanks to our friend and professional photographer Michael Chen.

I was quickly reminded of how tired my face gets when I’m shooting in the sun for a couple hours. Going out and shooting this game brought back the feeling of being down at school. I didn’t have anything distracting me or weighing heavily on my mind, I was just having fun being focused on the game and getting some good shots. I am available for freelance work and also know many photographers in the area so please feel free to contact me. Check out some of my photos from the soccer match below and check out some shots from my portfolio too.

I had plans of shooting the UC Irvine vs Stanford Women’s Soccer match on 9/11 with my friend and fellow photographer Lee. Due to misreading the game schedule we arrived at the Stanford soccer field almost three hours early. I then remembered that the Bay Area Sectional Tournament for Ultimate Frisbee was also being held at Stanford that day. We headed over to where the Ultimate games were being played but got there just as games were finishing up from the first round. After waiting about 30-45 min, the next round started and we shot the Revolver vs Boost Mobile game for a little while before heading back over to shoot the soccer game. I haven’t been shooting much because I’ve been busy with my full-time job and getting to shoot Ultimate and Soccer was a nice for a change. I also want to give a big shout-out to friend and professional photographer Michael Chen for letting us borrow some awesome gear to shoot with! Check out a few of the Ultimate photos below and check back for a post about the soccer game.

It sure has been a while…I’ve been long overdue for a post on my blog, a photo job, and for a few cover shots in the latest issue of USA Ultimate. This is the first post since I graduated from UC Irvine and moved back up to the Bay Area and I had to make sure that it was decent.

In 2008 I quickly made a name for myself in the realm of Ultimate Frisbee photography, joining the big names such as Matt Lane, Scobel Wiggins, and Andrew Davis. Those were the names that overlayed the corners of all the photos that appeared in the magazines and around the web from when I first started playing in my Junior year of High School. I even have photos of myself on my hard drive from the 2005 California State Championship that were taken by Andrew Davis. But back then I didn’t know the first thing about sports photography, even the workings of a camera were foreign to me. Back then it was all about playing hard, making an awesome play, and hoping that one of those big name photographers was at the tournament, or even better, shooting your game.

Shorty after emerging into the Ultimate Frisbee photography niche I found myself with experience shooting several national championships, a good amount of published work, and a bunch of connections. Most people in the Ultimate community have come to know me as “Scaughty Photography” and I have been getting requests to shoot tournaments all over ever since. For a short while I was traveling a lot which was great, but it all came to a pretty abrupt end when I decided to dedicate more time to school and work. It was even hard for me to shoot my own college team as I had other responsibilities as one of the captains. I had to turn down several offers to shoot College and Club Championships, which was definitely not an easy thing to do. I would get each issue of USA Ultimate and flip though the pages, looking at the photos and wondering if when I finished up school if I would break back into the Ultimate Frisbee photography scene.

It was a nice surprise when I got contacted this past year to shoot the 2010 Club Championships. I was a little hesitant at first but since I was still interviewing for jobs in the Bay Area and my schedule was still flexible I decided to go. I definitely felt a little rusty going out to Sarasota this past Fall to shoot the 2010 Club Championships but having Matt Lane as a partner to get all the divisions covered helped a lot. Our styles also differ and complement each others which is great when we are trying to get a wide range of different perspectives. Matt has a great deal of experience shooting these large events and is always offering tips and advice.

I stayed with the Polar Bears. It was a fun trip and they took home the gold which made it even better.

I was gone for a little while….but don’t call it a comeback. Next stop: 2011 Women’s College Centex, March 26-27 (Austin, TX). And as always I am available for freelance work.

This was a fun photoshoot that I did with UCI Track star Charles Jock. I went out looking for a cool location to shoot and came across the UCI boiler room for all the water that is distributed throughout the campus. I went in and told them that I wanted to use the facility for an athlete photoshoot and they said it was ok, so a few hours later I came back with all my equipment and a few assistants. It was a pretty cool location to shoot because it was industrial, unique, and there weren’t any disturbances. The place was really loud and I was pretty much shouting the whole time, but there were very few workers actually in the space and the ones that were there just worked around us like we weren’t even there.

5/23/10 – Irvine, CA – UC Irvine freshman Pratik Panda gets in the right mindset as he poses for a portrait.

On the same day as the fencing photoshoot, I also had another photoshoot. Once again I wanted to shoot something unique that doesn’t usually get much recognition. I have always loved playing ping pong and for part of this past year it got pretty big in my dorm between a few of us. I have always seen photos of actual ping pong matches but had never shot one myself so I attempted to create the perfect illustration. I set up a backdrop behind the table, two lights from the sides and big soft box right above my head. After some spray on sunscreen, water, and natural sweat, we were able to get a nice glistening on the skin. This photoshoot was prompted by the 2010 UCI Photolympics.

We even tested out spraying water into the shot, which had potential but didn’t work out.

My friend and fellow photographer Lee was there to help me set up equipment and also stand in as a test subject.

5/23/10 – Irvine, CA – Jessica Enriquez keeps her eye on the ball during the ping pong photoshoot for the 2010 UCI Photolympics.

I usually like to get both a female and male subject for most of my photoshoot sometimes one might just look more natural than the other. I think Panda looked a little more natural and fierce in his photo but I still liked this one too.

Below is a shot of the kids from the dorm who came out to help.

When the 2010 UCI Photolympics were happening I knew that I definitely wanted to enter the max amount of photos in the portraits category. I like shooting athletes and I wanted to do something unique. Luckily Alex from my dorm was on the fencing team at UCI and was willing to help me out with my photoshoot. He brought all his gear and we headed out late one night to shoot these photos. I also wanted to get a female subject wearing the outfit just to see what it would look like, so Jaclyn Wang also accompanied us on the shoot. The photos of Alex and Jaclyn both turned out great, but I could only select one to submit so I went with the one of Alex. Below is the shot of Jaclyn, along with a shot of our crew for the night.
