The Big West Conference Track and Field Championships was the last track event that I would be shooting this year. It was all the way up in Northridge but I decided to make the drive up because I hadn’t had a chance to shoot any photos lately and because the only other sport that was still happening was Baseball. I tried to shoot UCI athletes as much as possible but it was also nice being free to shoot whoever because I was not officially on assignment.

5/1/10 – UC Irvine, Irvine, CA – During the 2010 Asics/Steve Scott Invitational, Kristi Fryar competes in the pole vault. Fryar went on to finish fifth in the women’s pole vault at 11-9.

I had about an hour free this past weekend and decided to walk over to the track and get a few shots at the 2010 Asics/Steve Scott Invitational. There wasn’t much happening when I got there and it was between shooting long jump or pole vault. I usually shoot long jump and the light was really bad so I decided  to practice shooting pole vault. When I first started shooting the pole vaulters there were no clouds and I was shooting with the sun behind me. I started looking for something more interesting and moved around to a few different angles. Usually on assignment I will try to get a good variety or photos. This time I just focus on making one strong photo. I need more days like this.

On April 24th at 12am I participated in the UCI 24-hour Mad Film Dash for the first time. Every year I have wanted to do it but I have been busy. This was the first year that I got a chance to participate and it was a lot of fun. Stressful but fun. I was on a team made up of several kids from my dorm. We were given three genres to choose from, those being Superhero, Drama, or Music Video. We choose music video thinking that it was going to be the easiest, although found that it was much harder than we had anticipated. Everything from the idea, script, filming, location finding, and editing were all done in 24 hours.

We also had to incorporate a reusable bag, a reference to the UCI Bookstore, and the line “There’s more to it than that”.

The video was shot completely on a Canon 7D and with a 50mm 1.8. We used a custom DIY dolly for the rolling/panning shots. For lighting, we just grabbed desk lamps and other lights from our rooms and just lugged them around form location to location.

I used my blue backdrop since it was the only one I had, and just setup a little studio in the living room of my dorm. The shots for her project were done pretty quick, but we spent hours after just taking photos for fun. The rest of the photos can be seen here.

I have been doing filming for the UCI Women’s Basketball team and have been asked recently to work on several other video projects for UCI’s Athletic department. Right now I’m working with borrowed Canon 5D MKII’s. I’m looking into getting a 7D and will hopefully have something of my own so that I won’t have to keep bugging everybody to borrow a camera.

One of my residents did a Q&A piece on a local band for OC Weekly. We were thinking of a place to shoot and decided on a locker area about 100 feet from my dorm. It actually turned out to be a pretty cool location to shoot at. I shot the photo below for the article.

It also just happened to be fancy friday at my dorm (a day where we all dress fancy for fun). With a few more of my residents helping out, we didn’t want to waste the lighting setup on just one photo so after I was done with the band we all stood in for our own photoshoot. The camera was set to timer and we tried our best to get the timing right. Jumping in our fancy clothes might not have been the best idea seeing as somebody ripped their pants (see last photo).
