This winter season is killing me so far. Its been cold with no rain or snow which doesn’t seem right. I went up to Tahoe last weekend to go snowboarding and there was barely any snow. Usually by this time of year there is a ton and there aren’t even any storms in the near forecast. Here are some photos that I took a couple years ago up at Heavenly at Tahoe, when there was snow like usual. All shot with a Nikon D3. 14-24mm, and 50mm.

Back in July I was invited out to the California Academy of Science for work. The company that I work for, American Underwater Products (AUP), produces the scuba diving brands: Oceanic, AERIS, Hollis, Lavacore and OceanPro. It also turns out that Bob Hollis, the founder and owner of AUP, has worked with and supported the California Academy of Sciences since before the inception of the first brand, Oceanic, in 1972. Oceanic has made numerous contributions over the past 40 years to the Academy and the Steinhart Aquarium, so I went and visited to get a closer look at how the equipment was being utilized at their local facility.

I met up with Elliott Jessup, the Diving Safety Officer over at the California Academy of Sciences/Steinhart Aquarium. My girlfriend Alyssa also came to see what I do for work and get a personal tour. Elliott manages all aspects of the diving program, with responsibilities such as running science dive classes, maintenance of the aquarium and dive locker, and supervising volunteer divers. First he showed us the “Dive Locker” where all the diving equipment is kept. Next to the door there was a small and humble sign.

I hear the term “dive locker” used all the time at work and there was even a section of our previous website that was called the dive locker. I knew it referenced a place where divers kept their equipment but this was actually my first time inside of a dive locker. Surprisingly enough it was also my first time really seeing used products that my company makes in person…weird I know. At this point I had been working for Oceanic/AUP for about 8 months and saw the products everyday as I worked on the websites. Below, Oceanic Octo Regulators hang in the dive locker.

In the photo below Oceanic wetsuits are lined up and hanging on racks in the dive locker.

I shot a bunch of video and an interview with Elliot but the background noise in the building during the interview was really loud. I am thinking about going back and scheduling a time to go in before it opens to get some good shots and clean audio. Below, Elliot Jessup shows us around the dive locker and gives a breakdown of all the equipment.

After the tour of the dive locker we went and watched a show that featured a scuba diver. It was really cool to see the guy in the tank swimming by in front of tons of people wearing all of the Oceanic equipment. It was my first time seeing any of the gear in action and it made me proud to be working for Oceanic. Below, a volunteer diver cleans one of the tanks to prepare for an afternoon dive show.

After the volunteer divers got out the water I met them up at the top to take a few photos a shoot a few interview clips.

After the personal tour and show we parted ways with Elliot and went to check out a few other areas before we left. Alyssa wasn’t left to just watch me take photos. She had the Fuji X100 around her neck and wasn’t afraid to use it.

I like the light on this one. Its almost like light coming down through the trees in a forest. An underwater forest…oh wait..

All the staff and volunteers that we talked to were really nice and seemed to genuinely love their jobs. They were always interacting with the onlookers and having a good time. Below, during maintenance and tank cleaning the divers at the Academy always have time to interact with visitors.

Hopefully I’ll be doing more travel and photography soon for work. I am finishing up my open water certification this weekend which is going to open the door to a bunch of new and exciting opportunities.

It sure has been a while…I’ve been long overdue for a post on my blog, a photo job, and for a few cover shots in the latest issue of USA Ultimate. This is the first post since I graduated from UC Irvine and moved back up to the Bay Area and I had to make sure that it was decent.

In 2008 I quickly made a name for myself in the realm of Ultimate Frisbee photography, joining the big names such as Matt Lane, Scobel Wiggins, and Andrew Davis. Those were the names that overlayed the corners of all the photos that appeared in the magazines and around the web from when I first started playing in my Junior year of High School. I even have photos of myself on my hard drive from the 2005 California State Championship that were taken by Andrew Davis. But back then I didn’t know the first thing about sports photography, even the workings of a camera were foreign to me. Back then it was all about playing hard, making an awesome play, and hoping that one of those big name photographers was at the tournament, or even better, shooting your game.

Shorty after emerging into the Ultimate Frisbee photography niche I found myself with experience shooting several national championships, a good amount of published work, and a bunch of connections. Most people in the Ultimate community have come to know me as “Scaughty Photography” and I have been getting requests to shoot tournaments all over ever since. For a short while I was traveling a lot which was great, but it all came to a pretty abrupt end when I decided to dedicate more time to school and work. It was even hard for me to shoot my own college team as I had other responsibilities as one of the captains. I had to turn down several offers to shoot College and Club Championships, which was definitely not an easy thing to do. I would get each issue of USA Ultimate and flip though the pages, looking at the photos and wondering if when I finished up school if I would break back into the Ultimate Frisbee photography scene.

It was a nice surprise when I got contacted this past year to shoot the 2010 Club Championships. I was a little hesitant at first but since I was still interviewing for jobs in the Bay Area and my schedule was still flexible I decided to go. I definitely felt a little rusty going out to Sarasota this past Fall to shoot the 2010 Club Championships but having Matt Lane as a partner to get all the divisions covered helped a lot. Our styles also differ and complement each others which is great when we are trying to get a wide range of different perspectives. Matt has a great deal of experience shooting these large events and is always offering tips and advice.

I stayed with the Polar Bears. It was a fun trip and they took home the gold which made it even better.

I was gone for a little while….but don’t call it a comeback. Next stop: 2011 Women’s College Centex, March 26-27 (Austin, TX). And as always I am available for freelance work.

For five weeks this summer I was backpacking through Europe with my brother. With the Eurorail passes that we had we were able to travel anywhere in Europe that the trains went. We went to Paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Munich, Venice, Rome, Siena, Florence, Nice, Montpelier, Barcelona, and Madrid. Check out the video recap below that I made for our trip. If you want to take your time and go through the photos that I took you can view them here. Enjoy!

7/10/10 – Paris, France – Leonardo DiCaprio signs autographs at the Paris premier of Inception.

My brother and I just happened to walk by this. We saw a huge crowd of people and headed over to check it out. I got on his shoulders to see what was going on and soon after the cast of Inception was walking around and signing autographs.

7/13/10 – Amsterdam, Holland – Thousands of Dutch soccer fans celebrate the return of their national soccer team and second place finish at the 2010 World Cup.

We got up that morning and started walking around the streets just to find that everywhere we went there were hundreds of people dressed in all orange wandering around. I knew something was going on but every time we followed a big group of people it didn’t really lead us anywhere. We almost gave up but after following the right group of people we were led to a huge park where a celebration was going to be held later in the day. We had a few hours before the start of the celebration so we took a tour of the Heineken Brewery, and when we came back the park was packed.

7/29/10 – Venice, Italy – Two gondolas was docked and covered from the gloomy weather while a gondolier in the distance paddles by.

Venice….definitely didn’t need four nights here…but its still a beautiful place and I have the photos to prove it.

It looks a little messy, but that what happens when a bunch of girls do laundry and there aren’t clothes lines to hang stuff on.
