change of plans…change of rules

Long Story short, I went to set up a backboard remote at a Men’s Basketball game, had everything setup perfectly, was forced to take it down an hour before the game, set up a overhead remote, got some shots, left a little disappointed. I guess backboard remotes are no longer allowed at our arena….

With the assistance of Ian, Panda, and Lee, I was able to get everything set up quick and easy.

Shocktoberfest 2009

I’m always looking forward to shooting Shocktoberfest at UCI. This year the concert featured Cold Flamez, Shwayze, and Gym Class Heros. Personally I though it was better than last year.

Check out the slide show below…

San Francisco Pro-Am Summer Basketball League

Earlier this summer my friend Connor invited me to watch a basketball game in the city. It was the SF Pro-Am League that consists of a lot of college, D-League, and international players. Needless to say there is a lot of experience, athleticism and skill. Basketball being one of my favorite sports to shoot, I decided to go back and set up a backboard remote.

I started setting it up less than an hour before the game. It was rushed. No gobo. No tape on the focus ring. Didn’t clean the glass. Yeah, it was rushed. But it was a good chance to test out my new D3 and my 14-24mm.

NCAA College Baseball Regionals – Irvine, Ca – Day 3

Sunday. We finally had a game while the sun was still out, which meant two things: 1) our team had lost a previous game and had to win all the rest to not get eliminated, 2) better for taking photos (ISO 200 rather than 1600).

The game was scheduled to start at 4pm and I arrived early at around 1pm to set up a remote camera. I decided to set it up at home plate today. I had my camera behind home plate, looking down towards third base.

NCAA College Baseball Regionals – Irvine, Ca – Day 2

UCI was scheduled to play Virginia at 8pm. Today I was planning on setting up a remote camera, which I decided to set up for a shot at second base. I was told that I would have to set up my remote before 2pm because that is when the players for the 4pm game would get to the field and start warming up.

I got to the field at around 12:30pm. The decision was either to get a shot at home plate or at second base. My home plate remote success was pretty poor in the past, so i decided to get some action at second base. At first I was going to set up my camera above the dugout at first base, but ended up setting it up underneath the ESPN camera inside the first base photo well. If you look closely you can see it attached to the railing underneath the front of the ESPN camera.

back to baseball…another shot at homeplate action & post-game fireworks

I honestly expected to be shooting a lot more baseball this year. Last year I was pretty much the only person at the newspaper who would shoot the games. This year I have been busier and the newer staff photographers have been more inclined to shoot sports.

uci baseball, my first game this year, far from the last

UCI’s baseball program is one of our biggest sports programs. When I think of spring quarter I think of baseball. I can always depend on there being a baseball article and a photo assignment to accompany it.

UCI Mens BBall vs CSUN…Blacked Out!

Last week our school got blacked out in Eater Nation t-shirts for the ESPNU televised basketball game against Cal State Northridge. UCI beat CSUN 73-51. Here are a few photos from the game:

looking away from the action…looking for more

For once, I wasn’t the staff photographer covering the basketball game. I knew this was my chance to try something different. I wanted to get a new angle that I had never tried to get. Something away from the action. Something with a clean background. Something that people can’t see on their own. I had read an article about the 12-14 cameras that SI photographer John McDonough brings to an average NBA game, and came across this unique angle. An overhead remote of the players bench. I was told that I was not allowed to be up in the catwalks during a game, so I decided to setup a remote. I like how it turned out and am happy with all of the photos. The only thing was that the UCI Athletics photographer was actually up there during a game and got a shot that looked identical to mine. And his was all over the front page of the website that week…so much for a unique angle.

never rely on your remote camera

At the last basketball game I shot, I set up a remote camera on the shot-clock. It was a big game against our rivals, Cal State Long Beach, so I got there four hours early. I also dropped by earlier in the morning to make sure that none of the teams had an open shoot-around scheduled. From 3pm-5pm the court was clear.
