Just like being back in school

The UC Irvine Women’s Soccer team recently played in the Stanford-Nike Invitational Tournament. My friend and fellow photographer Lee got us passes through the Big West to shoot the match. This was UCI’s best season start, ranked 11th in the country and undefeated up until this game when they lost 2-0 to undefeated 2nd nationally ranked team, Stanford. It felt good to be shooting sports again, and with long glass thanks to our friend and professional photographer Michael Chen.

I was quickly reminded of how tired my face gets when I’m shooting in the sun for a couple hours. Going out and shooting this game brought back the feeling of being down at school. I didn’t have anything distracting me or weighing heavily on my mind, I was just having fun being focused on the game and getting some good shots. I have talked recently about doing a lot of video work. This past quarter I have been working for the UCI Athletics to create a promo video that sums up all the sports programs here at UCI.

The process included writing a script, a shot list, scheduling times to meet with athletes and teams, building a track and dolly, shooting, editing, reviewing, editing, and exporting.

The video was Narrated by Don Brantley.
The script was written by Ian Massey.
Pratik Panda was the main assistant.
CP Phan recorded the audio for the voice over.

Without the help of these people the video would not have turned out so well.

This is an example of the work I can produce. I am graduating in June 2010 and am looking for jobs.

UCI comes close, but fails to advance in the NCAA tournament

The UCI Mens Soccer team won the Big West Championship for the second year in a row and earned a first round bye in the NCAA tournament. They also earned the 16th seed in the tournament and got to host Stanford in the second round. I was excited to shoot such a big game, especially after not being able to shoot the second round last year due to the game being on the east coast. As a fan it was a disappointing game, although as a photographer it was interesting and action packed. I tried to get some emotion from our team after the game but there really wasn’t much. There were handshakes, a few hugs, and then a huddle. Nothing too special to end the night.

Last weeks soccer game was a hard one to watch. UCI did not play anywhere near as good as they could have. It made standing out in the cold even worse. The game was extremely physical and there was a lot of tension between both teams. There was almost a fight between some players and the coaches were going at it verbally on the sidelines too.

I tried to get some of the physicalness of the game in my photos.

unlearning my laziness & working the sides

Usually I’m pretty lazy when it comes to shooting soccer and I end up posting myself near the goals and I don’t really move around too much. Its easy to shoot from there, I get faces, good action, the ball, and it never fails. The one thing that I seem to miss out on a lot is headers. The ball is usually kicked to far to get a usable shot, or the ball is kicked from the other side and I get photos of the players backs. I decided to work the sidelines a little more than usual and came back with some images that are a little different than my usual.

uci soccer + 5d mark II…missing my D3

Throughout this week I have been switching cameras every couple days. I’ve been shooting with a Canon 5D MKII for a video project that I’ve been working on. When it came time to shoot my soccer assignment I forgot that I had lent my D3 to a friend. I figured that shooting soccer with the 5D would be nice, and it was…it just wasn’t as nice as shooting with a D3 and a 300mm prime.

However, the colors on that camera are amazing and photos were sharp. Nothing to complain about.

UC Irvine’s Amani Walker usually makes a photo interesting with acrobatic athleticism.

I was pleased to get the shot below of Amani Walker below sliding for a goal attempt. Its seems rare to get a shot of the player attempting to score a goal while being close enough to get the goalie in the photo. I think it turned out well.

At most times during the game I wished that I had a longer lens. Even when I took this celebration photo below I had wished that I had a longer lens. When I went to edit this photo I realized that it is also a good dejection photo that shows the losing team in the background.
