I was asked to take a photo of the UCI Men’s Rugby team’s new coach who also happens to be a professor at UCI. About 30 minutes before the shoot I loaded up my car with a ProPhoto 2400 kit and all my other equipment, with the help of my friend and fellow photographer Melissa Lee.
I was told to go to one of the social ecology buildings on campus where the coaches office is. It turned out that there was a nice plaza at the base of the building where I would have a lot of room to shoot. It was about 1:35pm so classes were in session, so the plaza was mine for about the next 30 min.

The last time there was a baseball feature photo for The New University was um….never? The whole time I have been a photographer with The New University there has never been a feature photo of a baseball player. From what I’ve experienced, the UCI baseball team is an exclusive club, and it is hard to get access.
The sports editor Umar texted me and told me that he wanted to do a feature photo with four of the baseball pitchers. It was going to be a star wars jedi themed shoot. It was all planned out. Light sabers and cloaks.

Last week I was called up by the sports editor to do a track feature photo. I asked him if it was more than one person and what event(s) they did. All he told me was that they “throw shit”. I was currently swamped with school work and didn’t have time to plan anything out so I went into the whole thing a little worried.

Last tuesday I got a text message from the Umar the sports editor, “Can u meet me tomorrow at 3 at the bren? For carson clark feature photo?”. I was hoping he would call or text. On Monday I saw the sheet of paper with the page requests that the section editors fill out. Under the Sports section I saw “volleyball feature”, which usually meant there was going to be a feature story with a photo.

My friend and fellow New University staff photographer, Brandon Wong, helped me out on a shoot I did for the newspaper the other day. He helped me set up and also managed to run around and get a ton of great shots.

My last feature-photo assignment was to shoot a portrait of UCI Womens Basketabll player Kiara Belen. The sports editor told me that Kiara was also a model and I knew immediately that this shoot was going to go smoothly. I was right.
I’ve done two feature photos for sports articles in the past two weeks. It amazes me every time I pull one off. On top of work, ultimate, basketball, and school, I have no idea how I manage to take some photos on the side. And its not only taking the photo. Most of my time is spent calling up friends, tying to borrow equipment, finding locations, getting access and asking for help. Continue reading ‘Recent feature assignments’
