back to shooting Volleyball from up top & reflections on the floor
Nikon D3, 300mm, 320iso, f/7.1, 1/250, manual I finally got to use my strobes for the last Women’s home game of the season. It was in the Bren Events Center at UCI which also has higher locations to shoot from. One thing that I noticed from shooting up there were the reflections on the floor. [...]
long lens…shorts lens…experimenting with shooting styles
Nikon D3, 300mm, 2500iso, f/2.8, 1/800, manual I’ve been shooting a lot with a 300mm lens. Mainly because I can’t afford a 70-200mm yet. I have noticed a difference in my shooting stye though. I haven’t been getting as close as I used to, although my photos look closer and tighter. Its good to practice [...]
recreating a masterpiece…power rangers style
This last weekend I shot volleyball players from UCI, Argentina, Netherlands and Korea. I was trying to replicate this Power Rangers poster below:
Shooting more volleyball but shooting less
I feel like during these first few weeks of school I’ve been shooting a lot. The thing that I’ve noticed is that I’ve been shooting less. I have been tying to think more about composition and have been more selective while shooting. I have also had interns at the paper shadow me on pretty much [...]
womens volleyball plays, so does the mens team
UCI Women’s Volleyball is on the rise. They have been ranked in the top 25 since the beginning of the year. I have been taking interns with me recently on every assignment. For the volleyball game I was lucky enough to get paired up with one of the residents from my dorm, Rashmi Guttal. The [...]

We got off to a slow start on the championship game day. After checking out of the hotel around 12:30pm, we got lunch and then headed over to the media room. We were the first ones there and later that night, the last ones there as well.
Road to Provo – NCAA Volleyball Championships – Day 3

After UCI beat Ohio State in the semi-finals, we had a day off. Besides a press conference in the morning, we had the whole day free to go explore and see what Provo had to offer. After eating a late lunch we stopped by the Provo Visitors Center across the street from our hotel. That’s [...]
Road to Provo – NCAA Volleyball Championships – Day 2

The second day in Provo was fully packed with full access to the team including private practices, strategy meetings, team lunch, locker room, training room and more. After talking with the UCI Athletics media reps, they hooked us up big time with all-access to the team.
Road to Provo – NCAA Volleyball Championships – Day 1

I drove up to Provo, UT with the Sports Editor and Associate Sports Editor, Umar Hussain and Mark Ratto. We left Irvine at 6:30am on Wednesday morning and got to Provo at around 4:30pm…or was it 5:30pm. The one-hour time difference was one thing that we could never seem to get right.
No.1 team crushed in the semi’s, i get caught…Utah here we come
Last Thursday was the MPSF Semifinals for Mens Volleyball. The No.1 ranked team UCI was playing No.5 USC. I really wanted to get a direct overhead shot of one of the UCI players serving. I had gone up in the catwalks prior to the start of the game to check out locations I could shoot [...]
