2011 USAU College Championships Women’s Semifinals: Oregon vs Michigan

Going into this semi-finals game I surely thought that Oregon was going to easily walk away with the win and I hadn’t really seen too much of Michigan throughout the year to develop an opinion of their team. The Oregon Women’s team is one of my favorite college women’s teams to shoot because of their athleticism, likeliness to huck, and big plays. They are fun to photograph. I felt like they got over confident as they knew they were a top team, and got complacent at a time where games really have to be earned. Michigan played a great game and showed that they deserved to play the next day in the finals. For this game Alex Peters, a fellow ultimate photographer, let me borrow his 40mm f/2.8. It sure did feel good to get behind some longer glass again.

uci mens basketball: shooting from the stands

Usually when I shoot basketball I sit on the baseline or set up remotes. At the Mens Basketball game on February 20th I decided to shoot from the stands that are behind the basket. This choice was partially influenced because I was shooting video from that angle as well, but I liked it a lot and got some good shots.

back to the baseline, back to basics

Although basketball is one of my favorite sports to shoot, I feel like it is one of the sports that I need to work on shooting the most. I also feel like shooting with my strobes has limited the ways that I see when I shoot basketball. I am trying to go back to shooting without strobes and to focus more on action, composition, and different angles. I shot a UCI Womens Basketball game almost entirely with a 50mm, trying to see all the different shots i could get from the baseline. I hope get back to the basics and really develop a strong basketball background.

The other thing I am working on is cropping. I always imagined that good basketball photos would include the basket. I found that a lot of times I had good action going towards the basket but that it wasn’t necessarily close to the basket. I used to crop my photos to include the basket when this happened, but I would also end up with a lot of empty space. While looking recently through magazines and online I found that it is very common to just have shots of the players and that the basket is not necessary most of the time. I cropped most of these photo accordingly.

Shooting more volleyball but shooting less

I feel like during these first few weeks of school I’ve been shooting a lot. The thing that I’ve noticed is that I’ve been shooting less. I have been tying to think more about composition and have been more selective while shooting. I have also had interns at the paper shadow me on pretty much every assignment, at which I usually let them use my camera for at least part of the assignment.

I didn’t shoot very much at this volleyball game. I was tired from school, work and dorm life, but when I got the shot below I knew I had the shot for the assignment.

womens soccer…rockin the yellow jerseys

I’m always happy to arrive at the soccer games and find out that our team isn’t wearing the blue jerseys. The color is better, it pops more, and its lighter. Just like the mens team, the women’s team is also looking strong this year. Sorry I don’t have anything technical to say about shooting this game. Check the settings if you have any questions.
